What is the Z39.50?

Z39.50 is an international standard (ISO 23950) which defines the protocol for retrieving information on multiple catalogs (even with different software), using the same method.

In essence, this protocol makes it possible for a remote user to search and retrieve the information available on another computer system, without knowing the search syntax used by that remote system.

The computer system adopted in this library is a Z39.50 server available for those interested in this type of access.

In order to use it, you need to have a client compatible with the Z39.50 protocol and be specifically configured to access our online catalog. So, you need to get some configuration parameters for your client software.

Research Tools

The library has activated two new tools to facilitate bibliographic research and data retention. A brief description of the two software follows.

Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a simple Firefox extension useful for retrieving, managing and citing the topics of one’s research. Once the “ plug-in “ is downloaded, it is installed inside the Firefox browser. The catalog of the Library of the Pontifical Biblical Institute is compatible with this Firefox extension, and is available free of charge to all those who search through its OPAC. Therefore, the use of this tool is only possible if you are using Firefox.

For a detailed description of Zotero and the method of use, we invite you to read "Introduction to Zotero" by Prof. Carlo Bottero of the Theological Institute of Assisi.

Quick Search

QuickSearch is a quick reference tool for the catalog of the Pontifical Biblical Institute. It is installed in the upper right part of the browser instead of fast search engines like google or yahoo.

This tool can be used on the most popular browsers such as Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera etc. It is based on the "Any Keyword" search and single words * less frequent * should be used to avoid insignificant results.

Before using it, you need to install the "plug-in" on your browser. To activate it, follow the instructions below.

  • First download and install the Firefox browser;
  • Start the browser and go to the Library home page;
  • Look at the top right of the browser window: the drop-down menu of the search engine bar will take on a blue color (see image reproduced below);
  • Click in the appropriate menu and select the item “Add 'New Quick Search PIB Library”
  • The fast search engine will be added to the list of available engines and will automatically position itself on the catalog of the PIB Library;
  • The engine allows direct search by keyword and immediately reproduces a table with the records in short format containing the searched word.
